IIS-350-U Application Notes

These application notes are updated occassionally for quick reference. If you are unable to find information regarding your IIS application here, please contact our IOTA Technical Services Team.

Maximum distance for operating a load
Wiring for switchable fixtures in indoor HID applications
Outdoor HID applications with photo switch or timer

MAXIMUM DISTANCE FOR OPERATING A LOAD
The distance at which the IIS Inverter will operate a load is determined by three things:

1) The wattage of the load
2) The input voltage (120V or 277V)
3) The gauge of the wire

Below is a reference chart to help determine the distance (in feet) allowing for a 3% voltage drop.

120V 277V*
Watts 14 gauge 12 gauge 10 gauge 14 gauge
50 watts 1600 ft 2468 ft 4084 ft 8623 ft
100 watts 809 ft 1249 ft 2066 ft 4311 ft
125 watts 646 ft 997 ft 1649 ft 3445 ft
150 watts 537 ft 829 ft 1372 ft 2874 ft
200 watts 404 ft 624 ft 1033 ft 2155 ft
250 watts 323 ft 493 ft 827 ft 1722 ft
300 watts 268 ft 414 ft 686 ft 1437 ft
350 watts 230 ft 356 ft 589 ft 1230 ft
*Incandescent lamps are not generally operated above 140 volts except by special permission by the authority having jurisdiction.

WIRING FOR SWITCHABLE FIXTURES IN INDOOR HID APPLICATIONS
Indoor HID fixtures on the emergency circuit MUST NOT be connected to a switch. Safety code requirements dictate that emergency lighting provide a specified level of illumination within 10 seconds. HID lamps cannot meet this specification, therefore any indoor HID lamps on the emergency circuit must not be switched off. If no HID lamps are being utilized on the emergency circuit, and a switch is present, then use the IIS-375-I for this application.

OUTDOOR HID APPLICATIONS WITH PHOTO SWITCH OR TIMER

Currently, there are no code requirements to light the exterior emergency lights of a building in daylight hours, therefore an automatic photo switch or timer may be present. If a timer is used, be sure that the timer motor is also connected to the IIS-350-U and that its load was included in the calculations. If power fails, and no emergency power is connected to the timer switch, the timer will not illuminate the connected lamps.
